Travelling with magic truffles or mushrooms in Europe
Truffles bought legally in the Netherlands become an import offence at almost any other border, also inside Schengen and by post. The import rules per country.
You cannot legally take magic truffles home from the Netherlands to any other country in our grid. Buying them in Amsterdam is legal; carrying them across a border turns the same pack into an import of a controlled drug in the country you enter. That applies in a car, on a train and in a parcel, and it applies inside the Schengen area, where there are usually no border checks.
Legal where you buy, illegal where you arrive
Drug laws apply to what happens on a country's territory. The Dutch exception for truffles is an exception in the Dutch Opium Act only; it does not travel with the product. In 19 of the 32 countries in the grid we confirmed that the law covers truffles, and in the other 12 psilocybin itself is controlled while truffles are not named. None of them lists truffles as legal.
Leaving the Netherlands with mushrooms is an offence on the Dutch side as well: the Opium Act prohibits taking List II drugs into or out of the country (Opium Act, art. 3).
No border check does not mean no offence
Schengen removed routine checks at most internal borders. It did not change national drug laws. Spain's drug decree, for example, bans listed substances "incluso a los efectos de la Ley de Contrabando", so bringing them in is contraband whatever the amount (RD 2829/1977). German law punishes the import of narcotics under § 29 of the BtMG without any border check being involved (BtMG § 29). Swedish Customs has said publicly that Dutch legality makes no difference at its border.

Post and online orders
Ordering truffles, mushrooms or a grow kit to an address outside the Netherlands is an import by post. Greek law says narcotics sent by post are seized and destroyed. In Portugal, a 2003 Supreme Court case involved cubensis mushrooms ordered online from a Dutch shop, as part of a trafficking conviction. Avalon Magic Plants presents its truffles on this site for a stay in the Netherlands, and that is the only use we describe.
Malta: hand it in
Malta has an unusual rule. A non-resident who arrives with drugs, hands them in at the first opportunity and declares them for own use is exempt from prosecution under the Medical and Kindred Professions Ordinance, art. 120A. It is the only rule of this kind we found in the grid.
Driving home
Do not drive after a trip, and not the next morning if you still feel effects. In the Netherlands, article 8 of the Road Traffic Act prohibits driving under the influence of any substance that impairs it, and that includes cycling. Spain fines driving with drugs in the body, whether or not you are impaired (RDL 6/2015), and Germany punishes driving while unfit under § 316 of the Criminal Code (StGB § 316).
Before you go
- Look up both your home country and the Netherlands in the compare view.
- Plan to use truffles during the stay, in a private place, with a sober person nearby.
- Finish or throw away what is left before you leave. Do not post it home.
- Check the truffle guide for a variety that fits your experience.
