Choosing magic truffles for a stay in the Netherlands, mild to strong

For a first time in the Netherlands, start at step 1 of the ladder below: a mild truffle such as Mexicana A, and half of the pack. Fresh magic truffles are legal for adults in the Netherlands, so this guide is about a stay there and use there. Nothing on this sheet is meant for taking home: in almost every other country in our grid truffles count as a psilocybin product.

The strength labels come from Avalon Magic Plants, the shop that publishes this site. They are the shop's descriptions of each variety, based on its experience with them. No lab measures the psilocybin in each pack, so read the ladder as an order, not as numbers.

The ladder at a glance

A standard pack holds 15 grams of fresh truffles. Weigh portions with a kitchen scale; the knobs differ in size, so counting pieces does not work.

Step 1: mild, for a first time

Avalon describes Mexicana A as "a mild to medium-strength truffle", suited to "people experimenting with psychedelics for the first time". Pajaritos sits, in the shop's words, "between Mexicana and Tampanensis", with mild visual effects and a light, social character.

Step 2: medium, the middle of the range

Tampanensis is the shop's "medium-strength" truffle, "both visual and introspective". Atlantis sits in the middle range according to the shop, which describes it as suited to both a first experience and experienced users looking for a calmer session. For both, the shop suggests 5 to 9 grams for a mild trip and 10 to 15 grams for a strong one.

Step 3: strong, for people who know their reaction

Hollandia is described by Avalon as one of the strongest truffles, with about twice the psilocybin of a standard truffle, and "suitable for experienced users". Dragon is based on Atlantis; the shop puts it in the strong group and suggests 7.5 grams to start and the full 15 grams only for experienced users.

Step 4: the shop's strongest

Three varieties carry the shop's strongest labels. Utopia "is not a product for beginners". High Hawaiians is called the most potent truffle in the range, with a suggested 8 to 12 grams for a mild to moderate trip. Valhalla is "built for those who know what an intensive psilocybin experience entails". These are for people who already know how they react to psilocybin.

How to pick within a step

• First time: step 1, and half the pack. The shop says the first effects come after 30 to 60 minutes; the Trimbos Institute gives 20 to 60 minutes (DRUGSinfo). Taking more because nothing seems to happen yet is a common way to end up with more than intended.
• Some experience, same company as before: step 2.
• Several trips, a calm setting, a sober friend present: step 3.
• Step 4 only if step 3 felt manageable at a full portion.

The effect of a given weight differs from person to person and from batch to batch, which is one more reason to begin low.

Before you buy

• Age: Avalon Magic Plants sells only to adults.
• Where: use them in the Netherlands, in a private place where you can stay for the whole trip, which the shop puts at four to six hours.
• Traffic: no driving or cycling afterwards. That is a legal requirement, see the Netherlands sheet.
• Storage: keep the sealed pack in the fridge, at 4 to 8 °C according to the shop, and use it within a month.
• Leaving: do not pack leftovers. Carrying truffles into another country is an import offence in almost every country on the travel sheet.
